Lytro finally announced their first consumer product today, a light field camera that will sell for $399. DPreview has a good overview up on the their site. I for one am very interested but am maintaining a healthy sense of skepticism about the first generation of the camera. Some day I can absolutely see this changing photography for the better but from the looks of the sample pictures the quality is too low for my taste.
I realize that megapixel count is not all important, but the optics also appear to be a little bit on the weak side. Even in the sample photos I can see some seriously noticeable chromatic aberrations and more importantly what appears to be a generally soft image. I will give it one or two more generations and see where it goes but the thought of being able to get amazingly short depth of field without lugging around the big optics and sensor size of an SLR would be amazing. Also, the day this technology comes to video will be something else entirely. What codec would that even be? I am guessing that they would have to make their own.
